Getting Started with the new Classroom Technology Suite

While this has been shared before, I wanted to provide a new link to our guide to getting started with the wireless video and interactive projector technologies that we’re installing in our classrooms.  Ten new buildings will be brought up to the new suite beginning next year, and we’re excited to provide the support needed to make that a smooth transition.

Wireless Projection and Extending Your Display

One of the features of our upgraded classroom suites in the Iowa City Schools is the ability to connect teacher laptops to the room’s projector wirelessly, providing wireless video projection as well as wireless control of the projector’s interactive functionality.  The video and instructions below walk through the processes of connecting wirelessly to a projector, turning on interactive functionality, and choosing whether to duplicate your laptop screen (the same thing appears on the laptop and the projector) or extend your laptop screen (so you can have different things on the respective displays).

Maximizing our Financial Resources

As we seek to expand the technology tools and infrastructure available to our students and teachers, we must also cope with one of the key realities of this investment: technology is expensive.  On one hand, of course, the cost of technology has consistently declined over the past three decades; the word processors of the 1980s frequently cost more than $2,000, for instance.  The drop in technology prices has been closely tied to the increasing ubiquity of and reliance on technology within our schools and society at large; in other words, while prices may be dropping, the amount of technology that must be purchased continues to increase.   Read More »

How does Iowa’s allowable growth rate impact ICCSD technology?

There has been a great deal of coverage lately of the opens in a new windowIowa legislature’s approval of a 1.1% allowable growth rate for the 2017-18 school year.  With a number of educational technology projects in the works, one of the questions that I’ve received from a number of teachers and community members over the last week is how our upcoming initiatives will be impacted by the allowable growth figure.   Read More »
