One of the challenges we’ve faced in terms of implementing Canvas over the past year has been trimester transitions. We are confident that we’ve now ironed out issues that have impacted students and teachers during previous transition periods, such that teachers should continue to have access to course materials and the Canvas grading system through the weekend following the trimester transition.
In order to ensure a smooth experience for teachers submitting their first trimester grades, we will be pausing the PowerSchool/Canvas sync for enrollment data from Thursday, November 15th until Sunday, November 18th. During this time, the most current enrollments for your second trimester courses will not change and new student enrollments will not appear in Canvas until Monday morning (when the sync has been resumed).
You will still be able to sync your grades from Canvas to Powerschool during that time, however, when the sync resumes at 11:00 PM on Sunday (November 18th), you will no longer be able to sync your first trimester grades from Canvas. You will still be able to enter the grades manually into PowerSchool. While this may seem unusual, this is made necessary by a technical limitation in Canvas that does not allow us to have two trimesters syncing with PowerSchool at the same time.
Course Cross-Listing Reminder
As a reminder, if you are planning on cross-listing your second trimester courses, you will want to make sure that is done before you start syncing your gradebook. Directions for cross-listing courses are available here.
As I noted in a previous post, teachers can still access grades/rosters and assignment submissions for Tri 1 courses. That said, we are working with Canvas support right now on an issue that is preventing teachers from editing Tri 1 course grades in Canvas.
We hope to have this resolved soon. In the meantime, I’ll note that grades can still be entered and edited within PowerSchool.

Accessing Previous Grades – Teachers
If you log in to your T1 Canvas courses this morning, you will find that the “Grades” page appears to be empty. In order to view and work with T1 grades, you will need to click the gear icon in the top right, and then choose “Show Concluded Enrollments”.

While I’m amazed that we’re already nearing the turn of the calendar to second trimester, I received a question today that reminded me that I needed to get some information to ICCSD teachers and students regarding what to expect. Specifically, what happens to Canvas courses at the end of the first Trimester?
A: All teachers and students will continue to have access to Tri 1 courses – whether they are yearlong courses or single-trimester courses – until midnight on June 30th, 2018. This will allow teachers to work on grading, students to reference previously-submitted work and materials, and so forth.
Since the courses will no longer be current, their status will change to “Past Enrollment” and won’t appear – by default – on students’ and teachers’ dashboards. Instead, users will need to click the “Courses” button on the left side of Canvas, and then “All Courses” to show both past and current enrollments. This area will also show teachers their future courses.
If you’ve read about Canvas, you may be aware that this is not the default behavior; we modified the access end dates to ensure that students and teachers can seamlessly use and reference previous course content until the end of the year.
