Virtual Applications

While ICCSD has adopted Chromebooks for its secondary 1:1 initiative, we do recognize that there is sometimes a need for software that can’t run within Chrome OS.  To address this need, we’ve launched apps.iowacityschools.org, which provides our students and teachers access to important Windows software on any internet-connected device.

How does it work?

Basically, you just need to navigate to apps.iowacityschools.org, log in using your district username (not email address) and the same password you use to log in to district Chromebooks or Gmail, and then click on the app that you want to use.  Check out the video below for a walkthrough:

Can I access software from anywhere?

Generally yes, as long as you have a device – generally a district-issued Chromebook – that has an internet connection.  There are a few software titles that we have to limit to on-campus users due to licensing restrictions, but the majority of our virtual app catalog is available to students and teachers no matter where you are.

Can I save files?

Yes.  We’re working on integrating Google Drive as a storage option within all applications (I’ll update this page as soon as that is complete), but for the time being you can save to the Desktop or Documents folder just as you would on a Windows computer.  The next time you log in to the system with your user account – no matter what computer you’re using – your files will be there for your use.

Can I print from a virtual application?

Yes, you’ll get the same printers that you would have on a Windows computer.  For students, your printer availability will depend upon the policies in place in your particular school.

What software is currently available within the system?

Our current software list includes: (updated August 25, 2017)

  • Microsoft Office 2016 (Access, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Publisher, Skype, Word)
  • Adobe Creative Cloud (Acrobat, After Effects, Audition, Bridge, Character Animator, Dreamweaver, Edge Animate, Fireworks, Flash Builder, Flash Professional, Fuse, Illustrator, InCopy, InDesign, Lightroom, Media Encoder, Muse, Photoshop, Prelude)
  • AutoDesk 2017 (Electrical, Mechanical, Inventor Professional)
  • Dr. Java

What if there is software that I need that is not available?

Teachers can submit software requests to the Help Desk. We’ll continue to add to our software catalog.

What if I experience problems accessing the system?

Please submit a ticket through HappyFox,  email the Help Desk at helpdesk@iowacityschools.org, or call the Help Desk at x4357.
